Yes, electric car batteries can be recycled. Valuable materials such as lithium, nickel, cobalt, manganese, copper and aluminium can be recovered and reused in new batteries. Before recycling, many packs also get a second life as stationary energy storage. In India, the Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022 make battery producers responsible for collecting and recycling EV batteries, and require recyclers to recover 90% of the materials in EV batteries from 2026-27.

What Happens to an EV Battery at the End of Its Life?
An EV battery is usually considered at the end of its life in a car when its capacity has dropped to roughly 70–80% of the original — typically after many years of use. At that point there are two routes:
- Second life: packs or modules that are still healthy are tested and reused for less demanding jobs, such as solar or backup energy storage, telecom towers or charging-station buffer storage.
- Recycling: packs that are damaged or too degraded are recycled to recover their materials.
How Are EV Batteries Recycled?
- Collection and testing: the pack is collected, its state of health is checked, and it is sorted for reuse or recycling.
- Discharging and dismantling: the pack is safely discharged, then taken apart into modules and cells; casings, wiring and electronics are separated.
- Shredding: cells are crushed and shredded, and the materials are separated into plastics, metal foils and a fine powder called black mass, which contains the valuable cathode and anode materials.
- Material recovery: the black mass is processed to extract the metals —
- Hydrometallurgy dissolves the metals in chemical solutions and separates them into high-purity salts of lithium, nickel, cobalt and manganese. It is the most common method for lithium-ion batteries today.
- Pyrometallurgy smelts the material at high temperature to recover metals such as nickel, cobalt and copper, but recovers lithium less easily.
- Direct recycling, an emerging method, aims to restore cathode material without breaking it down to basic metals.
- New batteries: the recovered materials are refined into battery-grade chemicals and used to make new cells.
EV Battery Recycling Rules in India
The Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022, notified by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and amended since, apply to all batteries, including EV batteries. Key points:
- Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR): battery producers and importers — including EV makers that supply batteries in their vehicles — must register and meet targets for collecting and recycling or refurbishing waste batteries.
- Material recovery targets: recyclers must recover a minimum share of materials, rising to 90% for EV batteries by 2026-27.
- Recycled content in new batteries: producers must use a minimum share of domestically recycled material in new batteries, starting at 5% in 2027-28 and rising to 20% by 2030-31.
- No landfilling or incineration of waste batteries, and only registered recyclers and refurbishers can process them.
- Labelling: since a 2025 amendment, EPR registration details can be shown digitally through a barcode or QR code.
India has a growing battery recycling industry, with companies such as Attero and Lohum among the established players.
Why EV Battery Recycling Matters
- Less mining and imports: India imports most of its lithium, nickel and cobalt; recovering them from used batteries reduces that dependence.
- Lower environmental impact: recycling avoids hazardous waste and cuts the emissions of producing battery materials from fresh ore.
- A circular economy: with recycled-content targets, materials from today’s EVs will increasingly go into tomorrow’s batteries.
What EV Owners Should Know
- You will rarely need to deal with recycling yourself: battery replacements are handled through the vehicle maker’s service network, which is responsible for sending old packs to registered recyclers.
- Battery warranties typically run around 8 years or 1.6 lakh km, and packs usually last longer.
- Good charging habits extend battery life — see our guide to how EV batteries are made and how charging affects them.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can electric car batteries be recycled?
Yes. Lithium-ion EV batteries can be recycled to recover lithium, nickel, cobalt, manganese, copper and aluminium, which can be used to make new batteries. Many packs are first reused for energy storage before being recycled.
What percentage of an EV battery can be recycled?
Modern recycling processes can recover most of the valuable metals. In India, the Battery Waste Management Rules require recyclers to recover 90% of the materials in EV batteries from 2026-27.
What is black mass in battery recycling?
Black mass is the powder produced when battery cells are shredded. It contains the cathode and anode materials — including lithium, nickel, cobalt, manganese and graphite — and is processed to extract these materials.
Who is responsible for recycling EV batteries in India?
Under Extended Producer Responsibility, battery producers and importers are responsible for collecting and recycling or refurbishing the batteries they put on the market, through registered recyclers and refurbishers.
